We Need TV!

The Democratic primary for U.S. Senate here demonstrates why TV ads are important and valuable in politics, despite all the criticism they get.

Outside of the campaigns and the insiders, there is little energy and interest in the campaign.

Polls show undecided – or clueless – leading everybody.

The problem is money. Nobody has much. And it’s tough to raise this year: bad economy, highly publicized campaign finance investigations and a discouraging environment for Democrats.

The race may come down simply to who has the most money and the best ads in the last couple of weeks.

It just proves that we need TV ads before we can make up our minds.

For all our protestations that we like to study up on the candidates’ stands on the issues, the truth is that we wait until they show themselves on television.

Then we decide who we like. Then we come up with some issue-based rationale with which to explain our preference.
