Hillary versus The Donald

This will be The Greatest Show on Earth. Or maybe a sign of the End Times.

It will pit the yin and yang of American politics, the alpha and omega, Wonder Woman versus Captain America, Good versus Evil (whichever side you’re on).

The only thing they have in common is our obsession with their hairstyles.

She’s been Arkansas’ First Lady for 12 years, America’s First Lady and First Advisor for eight years, Senator for eight years and Secretary of State for four years. He’s never held public office.

She channels her party’s yearning to elect the country’s first woman President. He channels his party’s nativist, racist yearning to “take back our country.”

She’s got Bill and Chelsea. He’s got Melania and Ivanka.

She’s a fierce proponent of women. He’s a crass exploiter of women.

Her career is one of public policy and public service. His is one of gambling and hype.

She got to the top through a lifetime of tireless striving. He got to the top through a lifetime of tireless self-promotion.

She is cautious, controlled and controlling to a fault. He is loose lips, swing from the hips and tee-it-high-let-it-fly to a fault.

She is shielded by a fierce bodyguard of loyal protectors. He is unchained and unfiltered.

Reporters say getting an interview with her is harder than negotiating a nuclear treaty. He’s a phone call away from any reporter or TV anchor.

She approaches the campaign with grim resolve. He is the rare candidate who seems to enjoy himself.

She has a penchant for secrecy that has hurt her from 1994’s Hillary Care to today’s email scandal. He has a penchant for the headlines that would embarrass a normal human being.

Her policy positions are shaped by years of grinding study. His positions come from watching “the shows.”

Her positions are carefully calibrated in her party’s mainstream. His are all over the lot.

Each represents what the other’ s true believers see as the worst of America.

Each is the distillation of two separate Americas.

Each, in their different way, is us.

Only in America.
