Bob Etheridge’s Vision

Bob Etheridge stepped to the podium, grasped the microphone and intoned solemnly, ‘This is a defining moment in history’ – then the next words out of his mouth were he’s running for Governor.

Because, he added, as the son of a Harnett County tenant farmer he understands North Carolina’s ‘journey.’

Where on earth do politicians dream up this stuff?

Next Etheridge was asked how he felt about the Constitutional Amendment banning same sex marriage. He said, “The nice thing is it is before the people and they will make the decision. I always believe the people in the state make the right decision.”

Last election ‘the people’ decided to vote Etheridge out of office but no one thought to ask how he felt about that.

Of course the press also asked Etheridge if he thought the video of him swatting and head-locking a student (a Republican volunteer who was using his cell phone to film Etheridge coming out of a Nancy Pelosi event) would haunt him again this election.

It was a set-up, Etheridge said. It sounded like the fellow who walked into a bar, got snookered, staggered out the door, ran head-on into a policeman and blurted out, The bartender set me up.

As the press conference wound down a reporter observed that, if elected, Etheridge would be one of North Carolina’s oldest Governors – and Etheridge replied solemnly that it’s ‘his vision not his age’ that matters.

Judging by the moonshine he’s peddling he’s exactly right.
