Parties and Good Times

The newspapers are reporting more good times in Governor Easley’s administration. Last summer the Governor’s folks at the Department of Transportation arranged a $30,000 ferry cruise with lobster, hors d’oeuvres and a band so they could enjoy seeing the tall ships. Now, two of the Governor’s appointees to the ABC Board have taken an excursion to Ireland complements of Irish whiskey makers to see the Ryder Cup.

The Governor’s press secretary issued his standard response: The Governor knows nothing. He learned about the Irish soiree by reading the Charlotte Observer.

State Representative Leo Daughtry, a Republican, sits on the House Committee that oversees the ABC Commission. He said: “If there’s no state money spent, it sounds all right.” (News and Observer; 9-30-06). God bless ‘ole Leo, but he missed the point.

Isn’t there a little conflict of interest when the Chairman and Executive Director of the ABC Board take a six-day expenses paid trip to Ireland courtesy of distillers who want to sell Irish whiskey here in North Carolina?

We’re still waiting to hear what the Governor thinks.
