Pithy and perfect. I counted: you’ve got 219 words there. I’m sure I couldn’t have done the same job in less than 1,000.

Gary,
I have argued since Reagan that the Republican scam is to say that “government sucks, government sucks, government sucks”, then get into power and run it into the ground with overspending, croynism, and incompetence, and then scream to the voters “See, government sucks.”
They are by no means perfect, but at least Democrats have a stake in making government work. Even his most ardent opponent would have to concede that under President Clinton, the Federal Government was in balance, and run more efficiently. FEMA worked, and over 19,000 pages of old, and defunct regulations were removed from the Federal Registry.
Today, we learn from former Mid-East section head of CIA that the Bush Adminstration cherry picked intelligence to get us into a war, and that Libby says Cheney told him to release classified info to reporters.
This Adminstration has lied to the American people at every turn, yet many loyalists refuse to acknoledge they have been dupped. They are like a spouse who refuses to believe their mate is cheating on them even when shown a picture. I always knew Clinton was lying to us about his sex life. Duh.! But the govenment was run well, and that is what mattered.
Clinton knew his legacy depended on making government work for average people. He did that not because he is alteristic, but for his own self interest. That is in essence the essential difference in Republicans and Democrats. Republicans have a stake in makeing government not work, and Democrats have a stake in making it work as best as possible.

“Republicans are miserable at running the government because they have nothing but contempt for government.”
“…the Republican scam is to say that “government sucks, government sucks, government sucks”, then get into power and run it into the ground…”
“Republicans have a stake in makeing government not work,”
I know some people who think that “Democrat” is just another word for “Communist”; who believe that voting Democrat will send your soul straight to hell; who are convinced that the Democrats are actively trying to destroy this country and turn it over to the U.N. (or the Chinese, or the Mexicans, or international atheists, depending on who you talk to). I try to avoid these people as much as possible.
It’s a shame that otherwise intelligent folk can get so carried away by their fear and loathing of “the others.” But at least it’s a shame that both parties share.
