It’s a sure sign a politician is in trouble: He gets a new press secretary, communications director or whatever you call it. So Governor McCrory shipped Kim Genardo to Commerce and replaced her with Josh Ellis.
I know nothing about the inner workings of this Governor’s Office, nor about the performance of his communications office. I knew Kim and Josh as reporters, and both are capable professionals.
I’ve seen this movie. For eight years (1976-1984), I was Governor Hunt’s press secretary. Every Monday morning, he met with his Cabinet and staff. Every meeting, every Cabinet secretary reported on the wondrous work being done in their departments. The conclusion was always self-evident and unanimous: “We’re not getting our story out.” Guess who was to blame.
The more likely problem here is substance, not spin. Performance, not PR.
Witness the coincidental announcement that DHHS gave a $3 million sole-source contract to a Washington consulting firm to fix the administration’s Medicaid problems.
Note that the N&O asked for public records regarding the contract eight weeks ago. “After repeated requests, Gov. Pat McCrory’s office released two documents Thursday evening; the Department of Health and Human Services released some of its records Friday evening, after issuing a news release about the Alvarez & Marsal contract.”
Ah, “Friday evening,” the classic dumping time for bad news.
No wonder DHHS and McCrory didn’t want anybody to know: The contract pays “$473 an hour for each of three principals of the firm, $394 an hour for each of three consultants, $242 an hour each for two analysts and $84 an hour for an intern.”
DHHS may have to hire a couple more 24-year-olds at $85,000 per year to supervise all its no-bid, personal services, sweetheart contracts.
Get to work, Josh. Your in-box is full.

Okay, so let's see. We've got a million-dollar sole-source contract given out by government. And, there has been a request for the public records concerning this contract but so far after more than eight weeks, only two documents have been released and then on a Friday when all of the printing presses come to a stop and all news channels shut down, other records were released. And then, it is realized that this government contract is paying like ten times more than it should for services rendered.

Well, imagine that, y'all. It isn't amazing to me that ANY of this stuff is happening even with our state government being run by supposed conservatives. What amazes me is the fact that McCrory & Co. is doing exactly what Obama & Co. has been doing ever since 2008 even after we conservatives have made SUCH a big deal about the Obama administration being so involved in government waste and a lack of providing information requested on suspect dealings and back room deals and gun running and failed Embassy security and illegal happenings within the IRS.....well, I could go on and on.

I'm very disappointed. I can't say anything you've said here is incorrect, Gary. That's what pisses me off the most.

Just an addendum to my post above.....

I guess I shouldn't be surprised but I just went to our sister blog site ( and saw that they have a front page presentation there saying almost the exact same thing you have put here in your very own front page presentation on TAP. It is so comical to see how our two blog sites bounce stories off of each other. Difference, of course, is that TAP is almost totally conservative/republican and bluenc is COMPLETELY radical liberal/progressive/democrat. Another difference between the two blog sites is that here on TAP, you can actually disagree with what is said both by the "management" and by other posters with impunity. On bluenc, if you disagree with what is said there, you're going to be banned from posting on that site. They talk a good game about only pulling people's right to post there if they're hateful or discourteous or say things outside their own preset parimeters....but, that's total bullshit. Disagree enough and you're gonna be banned, end of story.

Anyway, just wanted to make sure you knew, Gary, that I saw that "you and blue" were both standing on the same soapbox with the same script in hand. You libs are so silly.

Must have been a slow day. Don't you think McCrory might have spilled his coffee that day or something like that which was a lot more interesting. I heard his cable went on the fritz and he couldn't watch Andy of Mayberry. That could mean that he hates women, or something like that. Anyway "it's a sure sign" aint really a sure sign in the real world.
