Herman Cain may heed my wish and stay in the presidential race, but he has fallen prey to a political form of termites that I call MOHOPs – for headlines and stories that begin “Members of His/Her Own Party….”

In Cain’s case, MOHOPs are fellow Republicans who say things like “he’s a zombie; he’s dead but he doesn’t know it and he keeps walking.”

In politics, you’re in trouble when the MOHOPs pile on. It’s expected that members of the other party will criticize you. It’s a story when MOHOPs do it.

But the fall of one rival after another never seems to help Mitt Romney, the most electable Republican. He stays in his 20-30 percent comfort range. The anti-Mitts just go to somebody else.

First, they went to Bachman, then to Perry, and then to Cain. Now, it’s Newt Gingrich.

Another answer to Democrats’ prayers!

Newt Gingrich, who would have us believe Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac paid him a million-plus bucks – not as a lobbyist, heaven forbid, but a historian.

Note: My degree is in history. Where can I get a million-dollar gig?

Newt Gingrich, the man most responsible for the dysfunction in Congress. Newt Gingrich, the crybaby who shut down the government because President Clinton didn’t give him a good seat on Air Force One. Newt Gingrich, who modestly considers himself a Historical Transformational Figure like Churchill – and will happily tell you so. Let alone that Tiffany’s account.

It’s just too good to be true.

I agree. I'd much rather take on Newt than Mitt next year. Lots of ammo ready to load up on Newt.
Though Mitt having to swing to the right to appease hard core conservatives has really cramped his style and possible appeal to the middle.

MOHOPS - I like it!

I like how the left is trying to make the current GOP presidential nomination process something new and somehow different than what the dems have gone through themselves along the line. I mean, it's so funny to read the various posts about the different GOP contenders. Now, let's see....who ran for the Dem presidential nomination in 2008 and what was their particular "history"?

Obama...claim to fame was being a community organizer and only became a senator from Illinois because he ran against a scandal-ridden GOP opponent. And, now we have a president that isn't liked so much by members of EITHER party. His polling numbers are totally in the tank.

Hillary...Actually, my personal choice to be prez if a republican couldn't win it. I still like her, to be honest.

John Edwards....Dems equivilant to Herman Cain. 'Nuff said.

Joe Biden..."Mr. Gaffe" - dems answer to Rick Perry.

Chris Dodd...Countrywide scandal, Mortgage fraud scandal, AIG bonus scandal.

Dennis Kucinich...Supposed affair as congressman with a staffer.

Bill Richardson...Pay-to-play scandal in 2008 on Richardson's PAC.

What a ban of merrymen, huh? It's not a party problem, it's a politician problem. Truth is, the presidential election (and the coattail affect) will depend almost entirely on how the economy/jobs picture looks. It won't matter who is running unless there's just some god-awful scandal either one of the party's contenders have that people just can't get past.
