A Republican friend tells me that Florida Senator Marco Rubio is the GOP’s star of the future: the perfect 2012 running and/or perfect candidate for President in 2016.

So – to go with the Birther movement that questions whether President Obama is really from around here – Democrats need to launch a Boater movement to delve into questions about when Rubio’s parents came here from Cuba.

If you missed it, there has been a national media flap over the matter. The Washington Post started it, then Rubio replied.

Apparently, Rubio had said for years his parents came here after Castro took over in 1959. It turns out now they came here in 1956 – before the Castro takeover.

Boaters need to demand answers. Why the discrepancy in dates? Why the changing stories? Where is the long-form certificate proving when his parents came over?

Actually, I don’t think this is a big deal.  But if Barack Obama had misstated by three years the date when his father came here from Kenya, Fox News would be in a lather and the House would be issuing subpoenas.

What, are we back in gradeschool now? "Actually, I don’t think this is a big deal. But if Barack Obama had misstated by three years the date when his father came here from Kenya, Fox News would be in a lather and the House would be issuing subpoenas."

So, since Obama took all kinds of heat about his birth certificate and there were questions about him being "legal" to be president and since it caused just so much grief for him and the democratic party, it's "get even" time now.

I agree with ya, Gary. This thing with Rubio is just as silly as it all was with Barack Obama. If the democrats want to appear better than republicans, they'll lose the na, na, na, na attempt in some kind of childish tit-for-tat attempt at getting even.

They'd score a whole lot more political points by proclaiming any discussion on Rubio's citizenship as childish and say: "we're not going to lower ourselves to the level of the republicans on this issue".

There is no level to which some folk will not lower themselves, given the opportunity.

And what Democrats and their allies in the mainstream punditocracy are missing is that Marco Rubio wasn't even born when these events occurred, and can only know what his parents have told him about them. If there is an error in the narrative, surely it is their fault, not his.
