I served an eight-year tour of duty as Governor Jim Hunt’s press secretary (1977-1984), and it was the hardest job I ever had. So I’m reluctant to pass judgment on other press offices.

But the North Carolina mainstream media is making much of this being “Sunshine Week.” And I thought the attached article deserved some comment.

Paul O’Connor, Raleigh columnist for The Winston Salem Journal, takes Governor Mike Easley and his press office severely to task.

O’Connor wrote the piece after a bit of physical contact between a reporter and a new press aide to the Governor. It sounds like the kind of minor incident that would lead one of those supposed Duke-loving refs to call a technical foul.

But there is a larger point here – for the Governor, President Bush, Speaker Jim Black and all other politicians who make war with the press.

It’s not just the old adage: “Never get in a fight with a man who buys ink by the barrel.”

In fact, it is much more than that.

The public does have a right to know. And reporters are exercising that right.

But it is more than that.

Here’s my message for the politicians: Facing the press is good for you, too.

In the Hunt Administration, we made a dedicated effort to be responsive to the press. And not to hold grudges when reporters wrote negative stories. Because reporters are always going to write negative stories.

Here was our theory:

· You either feed the media beast, or it will eat you.

· A free way to get your story out is to give it to reporters, even though they may never write it to suit you.

· You learn a lot by facing up to reporters’ questions.

In fact, Hunt said later he liked holding weekly press conferences because he found out things his staff and Cabinet were hiding from him.

So O’Connor is right: open the door and let the sun shine in.

What folks like Mike Easley and George Bush do is try to control the press and its message. And that is called propaganda. Your point is very valid but for the most part people of this day and age want to have information spoon fed to them. The press is either two liberal “mainstream media” or conservative “fox news” People are going to believe what they want to, and quite frankly don’t really think of things like “free press”

If the media would write more about Mike Easley and put the spotlight on him and his administration - dig deeper - they might force Easley to operate differently. Otherwise Easley will only continue his ways and get away with it.

Look at the Carolina Journal story about the Southport Marina deal - and the developer that won the deal (Nick Garrett) is also contracted by Easley for $125,000 in home remodeling at Easley’s house in Southport. Why hasn’t the mainstream media picked up on this and the other campaign contributions tied to the developer and Council of State?

[…] Interesting, pointed column by Paul O’Connor, who did not just fall off the turnip truck and get up at the Capitol, about Gov. Mike Easley’s general unwillingness to answer questions or be available to the world except when there’s quick publicity to be grabbed. Spotted, btw, on the “Talking About Politics” blog in an entry by ex-Jim Hunt press secretary Gary Pearce. […]

From above: “So O’Connor is right: open the door and let the sun shine in.”

Many of us would love to see the sun shine on the “Office of Growth Management” at the WCPSS. Especially about how they decided who get to be reassigned where. Also, why does the Raleigh BoE back the “staff” 98% of the time? If there is anyplace where “darkness” prevails, it’s the WCPSS & the Raleigh BoE.
