Senate Republicans propose merit pay for teachers and state employees. What a terrific idea! But we shouldn’t stop there.

I’m thinking merit pay for legislators.

We could hold a statewide referendum after every session to let North Carolinians vote on how much legislators should be paid. Should get their full pay, half pay or nothing at all? Or even better, should they pay us back?

If a referendum is too costly and complicated, let’s just put a box on income tax returns. Let taxpayers specify whether they want certain legislators to get a little something extra – or, again, nothing at all.

If we keep paying them the same old thing, we’ll keep getting the same old thing.

Uh...we already have referendums on legislators' performance, Gary. They are called 'elections.' Perhaps you've heard of them. Legislators who lose them see their compensation reduced to zero.

Of course, nothing so drastic has been suggested for teachers. Every 'merit pay' proposal ever floated still pays even the worst teachers a full salary and benefits. But you don't hear their union not complaining.

How about just requiring every legislator and teacher to do what they're paid to do in the first place?

Novel idea...think?

Merit pay...what a crock.

I've worked a number of jobs. I've held positions from shift manager to a union position as material handler.

In none of these positions have I ever received a "performance merit" in the way of pay. I mean, is there some reason that a teacher or a roadway worker or...whatever...should be receiving pay because they do a good job?

C'mon, folks. Taxpayer money should be paid for "services rendered"...doing a good job. What the fuck is this about paying for someone doing a good job? How is that a good thing?

This is ridiculous...and, if you'd poll the taxpayers about it, you'd see that I'm not in the minority opinion here.
