There’s an interesting – and important – vote scheduled in the state Senate Finance Committee today at 1 p.m.
The bill is S1209. The Broadband for Everyone NC coalition – which I’m working with – views this as an industry-sponsored bill that will give control of North Carolina’s broadband (and economic) future to Time Warner Cable and AT&T.
The bill was introduced after the City of Wilson – tired of waiting for the cable guy to provide super-high-speed Internet service – went ahead and provided the service itself.
That’s right, people in Wilson have much faster Internet service than we can get in Raleigh!
So now the empire strikes back.
Shouldn’t the state be promoting advanced broadband rather than shutting down cities that provide it?

Similarly, I don't understand why NC allows cities to run their own water systems. We should allow Coca-Cola and Pepsi to privatize our water supply and run it for us. Why haven't Hoyle and the NC Chamber championed giving all public services over to corporate masters? Oh wait, they have. Water is about the only thing we have left.

This is an important bill that is flying under the radar. The City of Raleigh provides free WiFi downtown and this has been a huge hit. My guess is that the bill would prohibit cities from doing this or creating its own network when the utilities aren't providing the service. High speed Internet service is vital to the economic prosperity of any community. So if Google wants to come here with their super duper high speed service, would the bill prohibit that too??? Priceless.

Same old same old from AT&T and Time Warner. They say they are for competition... but then they run bills like this that speak for themselves. Are the Democrats in NC oblivious to what is going on at the national level at the national broadband plan and FCC? Must be too busy taking thick PAC envelopes from Time Warner, AT&T, and the NC Cable Association in anticipation for a whooping this election.

This broadband deal could pave way for a better country, a sustainable economy. I wish that the plan would come to realize for there is a great opportunity behind the Broadband for Everyone. The life of the battery and the cost of the car are the two components being addressed right now with electric vehicles. Right now a car that is affordable doesn't have long battery life, and one that has a good battery life would need a substantial auto loan. With how numerous corporations try to create an affordable battery with a long life, somebody is bound to advance technology enough soon. Electric cars still have a long way to go, however they will make it there someday and when they do I can't wait to own one.
