The way Art Pope sees it his blasting Richard Morgan (because Richard blasted Governor Perdue) wasn’t defending Governor Perdue...
… but how did Perdue see it?
“Well, miracles do happen!” the Governor chortled, delighted to have Pope’s support.
What’s ironic about all this is for years Art’s been hammering Richard, saying he’s too cozy with Democrats and now, suddenly, Art’s cozying up to Perdue. I’m beginning to think the fact is Art just doesn’t like Richard and all his past homily’s about his concern for party loyalty were just window dressing to hide what is really just a good old-fashioned feud that’s been going on for over a decade, since Richard ran against Art for Republican Leader in the State House and beat him.
Anyway, whatever the reason, Art’s latest broadside against Richard is a little strange: Last Wednesday, Richard filed a complaint with the State Ethics Commission accusing Governor Perdue’s Cabinet Secretary (and former lobbyist) Lanier Cansler of giving a $30 million no bid state contract to one of his former clients, which in turn paid Cansler’s former lobbying firm, which in turn’s been paying Cansler.
Now, none of these facts are in dispute: Money flowed from Cansler’s Department to his former client to his former firm then back to Cansler – and that sure sounds like ‘pay to play.’
Not so, says Art Pope.
He says what Perdue and Cansler did was all perfectly legal and the one who’s really guilty of ‘pay to play’ is Richard Morgan – how’s that? The proof Pope says is simple: Richard accepted a $250 contribution from the Home and Hospice Care Association’s political committee two years ago which, the way Art sees it, is all the evidence anyone with two drams of sense needs to see the reason Morgan is attacking Perdue is to keep the those $250 checks (every two years) flowing.
And Art wasn’t done. He went on to say I’m a villain, too, for being Richard’s friend and lobbying for the Hospice and Home Care Association.
Well, he’s technically correct on his last two points. I’ll explain and you decide about the villain part. Last year, I did make TV ads attacking Democratic Senator Doug Berger – who may be the most liberal person in the legislature – for the Home and Hospice Care Coalition. Back then Democratic attorney and former Hunt administration official Jack Cozart, who was working with the Home and Hospice Care folks, said that if I was going to be making ads attacking his fellow Democrats I’d better register as a lobbyist under N.C.’s new law. That didn’t sit too well with me but the Hospice folks went ahead and registered me out of an abundance of caution. In the end all that got me was a complaint filed against me (by some anonymous Democrat) with the Secretary of State’s Office. After that, another lawyer from another Democratic law firm advised the Hospice folks I should never have registered in the first place because producing an ad wasn’t lobbying.
Anyway, to add insult to injury, this morning my wife opened the newspaper and the first thing she saw was Art saying Bev Perdue’s innocent as a lamb, Richard Morgan’s a scoundrel and I’m a villain.
Art’s unrelenting feud with Richard is now rolling into its eleventh year and most of us, by now, are just plain worn out with it. Art’s obsession with Richard is getting to be a bit like Ahab and the whale.
Without blinking Art spent half a million dollars to defeat Richard in 2006 then, after Art’s candidate won, as soon as the fellow got to the legislature he got himself in trouble for making improper sexual advances to a Democratic Legislator; his political career ended a year later after he had a run-in with a tree trunk and was charged with drunk driving.
A year after that Art picked one of his employees at the Locke Foundation to run against Tom Fetzer for State Republican Chairman; that was even more colorful and made history as far as Republican State Chairman’s races go when sexually explicit emails Art’s married candidate had sent to his girlfriend started popping up on the Internet. Then just when we all figured we’d seen politics at its worse some anonymous gremlin supporting Art Pope’s candidate sent out emails saying Fetzer was gay.
I guess we Republicans haven’t had any entertainment (or made fools of ourselves) for a while so now Art is defending Bev Perdue saying she’s not guilty of ‘pay to play’ and blasting away at Richard Morgan again.
And, all in all, this is one pretty strange turn of events in Republican politics.

Before the last few months, I would have placed the odds of Carter Wrenn pimping for Richard Morgan about equal to Benjamin Franklin welcoming Benedict Arnold back into the fold. Richard Morgan burned his bridges with any real Republican back when he went political whoring with Jim Black. He deserves forever to stay in the dog house, unacceptable in the extreme in any genuine Republican gathering. His buggering of Republicans in the last redistricting is enough to make him permanent persona non grata. But maybe money does strange things. I know my regard for Carter has declined considerably ever pimping article he has written for Morgan. Maybe Pope went a bit overboard in a few of his comments, but the traitor Morgan capsized the whole ship. I can forgive Pope, but it is almost to the point where it will no longer be possible to forgive Wrenn. Morgan passed that point when he made his dirty deal with his partner in corruption, Jim Black.

You don't have enough money or ink to take on Art Pope.

Carter: I've admired you for a long time, but don't you think it is a little early to expect us to welcome RM back into the fold with open arms? You'll not get much traction with the grassroots by promoting Morgan. I'd prefer to see you, Art, Fetzer, Stam, et al and Berger, et al get on the same page and deliver something significant for the voters of this state. Any Morganite deals in a new GOP majority in either house will be seriously frowned upon.

There are some things a politicians does not recover from. Morgan made his choices when he got into bed with Black (whom he knew to be criminally corrupt), and then actively worked to screw over his "fellow" Republicans in the last gerrymander. Rank and file Republicans would be insane to welcome him back into the fold. He's a poster child for what's wrong in Raleigh, and the last guy the Republicans need representing them in any capacity. Readers may recall that he made a rather pathetic attempt to run for State Superintendent of Public Instruction in 2008, though God only knows what made him think he knew enough about education to justify seeking that position. Thankfully the voters were not fooled. I'll never forget his shockingly awful performance in debate against the eventual winner, June Atkinson. Confused, distracted, unfocused--these words only begin to describe his rambling behavior on the stage that night. I was there and saw it firsthand, and I don't think there was a person in the auditorium, friend or foe, that was not at least a little bit embarrassed for him. But he came away thinking that he had done fine. He needs to get out of politics. We have enough nuts up there already.

Dear GU Wonder, Back when conservative Democrats started joining the Republican Party a lot of traditional Republicans said they weren't 'real Republicans.' It wasn't very pleasant and I guess now everyone would as soon forget it but the point I'm explaining -- gently -- is whenever I hear a fellow saying, 'I'm a real Republican and you're not,' what I remember is all the 'real Republicans' in conventions in 1976 who said the same thing about conservatives who supported Ronald Reagan when he ran against Gerald Ford. Back then, it took me awhile but I figured out there was a big difference between a 'real Republican' and a conservative. There still is.

Carter, I want to say that you did great work digging the dirt on some in Purdue's administration. You also made a great ad on Dougie Berger. Why screw it up by using a goof-ball like Morgan as a spearcarrier? Morgan himself is as dirty as they come. I am sure it gave a lot of folks the chuckles seeing him making an ethics complaint against someone else. The proverbial pot calling the kettle black. Why not use someone with some credibility? The best person to have been carrying the ball on that issue would have been the NCGOP chairman. Fetzer seems to be a johnny one note in his political broadsides, aiming them at Purdue, which is odd in that Purdue is not up for election this year. But then one remembers that Fetzer has an ambition to run against Purdue in 3 years and that is obviously his reason for always having her on the firing line. Still, this issue is about the Purdue administration and should have been a natural for him to pick up. I wonder if he is afraid that doing so might step on some special interest toes of some folks he sees as potential contributors of Fetzer for Governor and that is why he has shyed away from it. Even if personal political ambitiions may give Fetzer cold feet, there are others who would have been great messengers. Why not our House or Senate GOP leaders? Make it an issue for the whole team. By either asking Morgan to take the lead or standing aside while he did, you have caused division in the ranks, Carter. You developed a great issue but now it is likely to go nowhere, once it is wrapped around Morgan. As to conservative and real Republicans, you do have a point that they are not always one and the same. But in the Morgan affair, they are. Not only did Morgan defect from the Republican camp, but he also defected from the conservative camp. After their rotten deal with Jim Black, Morgan and Brubaker started calling themselves moderates. They organized a North Carolina branch of the Main Street Committee, a national moderate to liberal GOP organization pártly financed and promoted by Hungarian sociailist billionaire George Soros. They financed the ads run by their NC chapter of the Main Street Committee through a corrupt deal with a Virginia tobacco company. Pay to play at its worst! Morgan is not a conservative Democrat or a conservative of any sort. He did the same thing in North Carolina that Arlen Specter did in the US Senate. At least Specter had the intergrity to at least switch parties instead of pretending he is still a Republican like Morgan does. And instead of an ideological compass, Morgan has an ideological weathervane. The wind is blowing conservative now, so that's what he decides he will say he is, at least for the moment. A phony like Richard Morgan is the last thing the conservative movement or the Repubican Party needs.

The dispute between Morgan and his traitors has never been about position, personalities or revenge. In 1994 this country underwent a signifigant shift to the right. I believe the contract with America and the contract with NC was a major factor in the changing of faith and trust from the old democrats to the new republicans who offerd a defined promise to fix the government's problems. In NC Harold Brubaker and R. Morgan were elected to leadrship in the house. In each caucus we watched the "leaders" ignore the will of the members in deference to polls or advice from Paul Shumaker and other old guard repubs. We watched deal after deal with Mark Basnight violate our promises to the people of NC. We saw our rules chairman rightfully being investigated for extorting money from lobbyist. The following elections show the people's loss of faith by reducing our lead in the house to one vote. Then after the deal Morgan cut to corrupt Mike Decker and betray the voters of NC their will. Morgan continued his support for all things corrupt or democrat by drawing redisticting maps to keep repubs out of the majority for the near future. Morgans attack on those who should be his friends, I beleive is truly a sign of needed mental health treatment. The Republican party is once again at a point where we can accomplish what the people are asking for by respecting their will and the democratic process. Or allow a few selfish, pompous, arrogant theives disrupt, divide and destroy our futures.

The Carter who wrote the original post is not nearlyas "Dim" as the above poster, who apparently is ignorent of the fact that Sam Ellis was one of the good conservative Republicans who were redistricted out of the legislature by the Jim Black / Richard Morgan / Harold Brubaker / Paul Shumaker redistricting. The bloody shirt of that redistricting disaster needs to be waved aloft every time one of those rats tries to make an appearance in any conservative or Republican context.
