A while back two meandering tribes of ‘anony-mices’ – as Ms. Joan Troy once called them – set up camp over on the Talking About Politics Forum and, for the past year, these diminutive creatures have made war on one another and just about anyone else they lay eyes on – which brings us to the first political trait of anony-mices: Fierceness. Like Apaches anony-mices are unnaturally warlike.
For example, the other day one of the two tribes declared holy war on Richard Morgan the minute he announced for State Senate and they’ve been in a white-hot passion ever since telling anyone who’ll listen that Richard is more liberal that Barack Obama – which leads us to the second trait of anony-mices: They’re as deceitful as wicked women.
Richard Morgan opposes gay marriage, President Obama’s Stimulus Packages, Governor Perdue’s tax increases, closing Gitmo, and putting terrorists on trial in New York City. He supported Jesse Helms, Ronald Reagan, John East, Lauch Faircloth and Richard Vinroot.
But none of that matters to this tribe of anony-mices because Richard didn’t support George Holmes for Speaker back in 2003; worse in the anony-mices' eyes Richard ran against George and beat him so instead of George and Democrat Jim Black being Co-Speakers of the House Richard and Jim Black were elected. All that happened seven years ago, which brings us to the anony-mices third trait: They bear grudges like Hatfields and McCoys.
Finally, there's the anony-mices’ most vociferous trait: They are wild about sex. Not experiencing sex. Gossiping about sex.
During the first five years Gary and I published Talking About Politics I deleted exactly three obscene comments from the Forum. Then last year Chad Adams ran against Tom Fetzer for State Chairman and the anony-mices went to calling everyone in sight gays or lesbians or adulterers or philatelists. Gary got so shocked by it all he called one day and said, I always suspected Republicans were a little kinky when it comes to sex – but don’t you think you ought to take the copies of those sexually explicit emails off the Forum?
I must have deleted six hundred posts.
After that things quieted down a bit until one morning three months later a friend who supports the John Locke Foundation called and said, Someone just anonymously posted an article on your Forum that says just about everyone who works at the Locke Foundation is wife-swapping – including John Hood.
John Hood isn’t even married.
Ever since wife-swapping charges have been flying back and forth between the two warring tribes and I’ve been deleting away.
Back in 2008 when Elizabeth Dole’s ‘Godless’ ad backfired I figured maybe one good thing would come of it – the folks running Republican campaigns would figure out there’s a line you can’t cross in politics. But it hasn’t worked out that way.
Instead, like Viet Cong guerillas our Republican candidates have changed tactics: Instead of slamming opponents in the light of day they now send bands of anony-mices scurrying out in the dead of night, stealing across that line on the Internet, and slashing away and what’s bound to happen next is as plain as the nose on your face: It’s all going to boomerang. Again.

Carter, I once had a great deal of respect for you, but now you make me start to wonder. Legislative leadership battles are team sports, not every man for himself. The teams are called political parties, and they chose their own captains and unite within the team / party caucus to put them in office. What Morgan did was outrageous and unacceptable and simply cannot be foregiven. He took a meaningless title and a small slice of the power and effectively put his corrupt ally, Jim Black back in the real power. The stink of Black's corruption is something that never comes off of Black's key allies, and it is something that can even transfer to subsequent allies of those tarred with it. The whole Morgan fifth column operation was apparently driven by Jim Black playing on Brubaker's personal dislike of Leo Daughtry and using a certain ''Republican'' consultant as an emissary, and Morgan was chosen as the front man. Morgan and Brubaker worked hand in glove with Black to undermine the Republican caucus and the chosen nominee for Speaker of Republican legislators by majority vote, Leo Daughtry. Knowing that the fifth colomn movement was driven by a personality conflict, Daughtry even withdrew to try to bring the renegades back into the fold, and the caucus put up George Holmes instead, but by then the renegades were on too much of a power trip and ego trip to even think about the good of the party or the good of the cause. When redistricting came that session, Morgan went along with Black in screwing Republicans. The small bone he was thrown was to be able to choose which specific Republicans got screwed. Morgan chose solid conservative party stalwarts to screw, in other words, people who had too much integrity to brownnose Morgan. Conservative? Yes, at one time in his political career, Morgan was indeed a conservative, but after aligning with Black he and some of his allies started telling people they were now moderates. One wonders what this political chameleon will tell voters in Morgan and Harnett counties that he is this time. The best description of Morgan is as an opportunist. He will be whatever he thinks will get him ahead at a given point in time. I will admit that I can remember the time that Morgan was a conservative, but then again, I can also remember the time that David Miner (Morgan ally) liked girls. Is the rumor that you are working as Morgan's consultant true????

Carter here's a fitting political slogan you can pass on to your buddy Morgan: ''If you liked Benedict Arnold, you will love Richard Morgan!'' The patiots never forgave Arnold, by the way.

Um, person-calling-himself-Aristotle. I knew Aristotle; I worked with Aristotle; and you, sir, are no Aristotle. I'm no fan of the Republican party, but I'm always gratified to see the semblance of sanity within its ranks. You, sir (and I use the term loosely), are not among those evincing evidence of a rational thought process. On a related note, how do the good folks running TAP know that a humane cartoon of your persona would include bandages over a mouth that spews drivel?

Aristotle - Thanks for explaining the motivations behind the Morgan political machinations. I knew the bare facts of what Morgan did, but not why. What Republicans absolutely do not need is RINO's, chameleons, and opportunists. And praise from the likes of Brunette is the kiss of death for a true conservative. Any Republican craving the approval of a Dem/lib/progressive needs to just hang his head in shame & cross the aisle already. So let me get this straight (as I'm a political newby) - Morgan sold his soul to the devil, Jim Black, in exchange for power, but that earned him eternal scorn from true conservatives. He was supported by NC Mainstreet - affiliated with Republican MainStreet, home of "progressive" R's like Schwarzenegger & Sens. Collins & Snowe, and, at least at one time, partially funded by socialist George Soros. And there's been a long-running feud between Morgan, Carter, and other perhaps progressive, or perhaps pragmatic Republicans on one side, including Fetzer, and the John Hood/Art Pope conservatives on the other, including Chad Adams? Well, you've got to hand it to the Obama for America folks 2 yrs ago - they sure knew how to organize & how to get folks inspired - from upper middle class liberals to inner-city & rural poor to the socialists & greenies. They ALL united to work their patooties off to elect a socialist posing as a centrist. But now, when we have a populace furious with Obamacare, the lies we've been told and the arrogance & inaccessibility of our Dem legislators, somehow Republicans are fighting each other and destroying any credibility we might have in the eyes of voters. Why do I have a sinking feeling that we will once again snatch defeat from the jaws of victory?

EQM - Morgan did not just support the NC Mainstreet committee, affiliated with the George Soros associated national Mainstreet association, a liberal Republican group. He actually organized the NC branch and then funded it with a corrupt deal with a Virginia tobacco company. No conservative pals around with socialist Hungarian billionaire George Soros or any group he funds. Carter lists Republicans who Morgan has supported in the past. All of the conservatives on that list last ran in the last century. That was before Morgan's corrupt deal with Black. Carter also refuses to recognize how Morgan and Brubaker played right into Black's divide and conquer strategy. If the GOP caucus had remained united, it could have forced a genuine 50 / 50 power sharing with the Democrats, including a veto position on redistricting. However when a small rump group led by Brubaker and Morgan split off, the Democrats were able to do a deal where they only had to throw the rump group a few crumbs while Black kept most of the real power for himself. All of this goes back to the competition between Brubaker and Daughtry for the House Minority Leader position going into the 1994 election. Daughtry garnered a lot more support and prior to election day Brubaker made a deal to bow out with the stipluation that he would support Daughtry for Minority Leader if Daughtry would support him for Speaker in the then considered unlikely event that the GOP won a majority. The unlikely happened and Daughtry stood by the deal. Brubaker largely froze Daughtry out as much as he could. Rules Committee chairman Richard Morgan emerged as Brubaker's real chief lieutenant. Bumbling Brubaker managed to let the majority slip away from him over a couple of eletion cycles, partly due to relying on Shumaker as chief consultant. When the 2002 election unexpectedly produced another Republican majority, Daughtry had a solid majority of members of the GOP House caucus supporting him for Speaker. Brubaker's ego just could not take that, nor by extension, Morgan's. They turned out to be easy prey for Black's efforts to peel them off from the caucus.

One part of the sordid 2002-2003 story that I left out which is necessary to explain how Rejpublicans went from a narrow majority to the lightweight end of a ''co-speakership'' is the role of Rep. Mike Decker. Decker, like Morgan, had previously been a conservative. Decker wanted the poistion of Speaker Pro Tem, not for policy or political reasons, but because if he held it, his legislative retirement checks would be significantly higher. He did not get the votes in the caucus for that position and got into a snit. Black took adbantage of this by offering Decker that position and a goody bag that included an envelope full of cash delivered in a fast food mens room, to switch parties, which then created a tie between Democrats and Republicans. That is the point at which Black then played his Brubaker card. Black and Decker later both went to prison for their corrupt deal. Decker tried to come back and run as a Republican for his old seat as if nothing had happened, but primary voters would have no part of him and defeated him. Morgan shuold meet the same fate for the same reason. The Republican Party does not need phonies like Decker and Morgan. They have both cost us far too much already.

It should also be remembered that all of the corrupt legislation that has been passed since then could not have become law had it not been for the gerrymandered redistricting which the illegal regime of Black & Morgan imposed for 2004 and subsequent elections. A lawfully constituted House (one minus Black and Decker's mens room deal) would not have redrawn the districts in a way that allowed the Democrats to seize power despite having been voted out of control.
