I tried to catch some of the 'discussion' while it was in progress yesterday, and I watched and read a good bit of the coverage (which is always more important than the actual event) to see how it would impact on public opinion. I was somewhat surprised at how well the Republicans handled themselves. In the actual discussion they came across as more focused, more serious, and more resonable.

The president seemed rather defensive at times, and was frequently high-handed towards the Republicans who nevertheless remained impeccably respectful. The Democrat lawmakers in the room spoke mostly in bumper stickers, filling their alloted time with talking points, irrelevant stories, and campaign rhetoric.

Since virtually no one actually watched the show, however, none of that is particularly relevant today. What people will get from this is what the news media tell them happened, and I'm shocked that as of this morning most of the mainstream media is acting like the event never occured. There was a great deal more 'build up' to this than there has been reaction and analysis, and what analysis there has been completely misses the central point--that the Obama administration has now played what it conceived of as a trump card and got bumpkis for it.

Frankly, I expected that the media would be all over the Republicans today, focusing on those bits and pieces of the Republicans' performance that can be spun to fit the Democrat's narrative of obstructionism, and generally expounding a pro-administration interpretation of the event. I'm amazed that they can't seem to find enough to criticize to make the effort worthwhile.

In that light, this must be seen as a major dissappointment for the Democrats.
