Over the last several months Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services Lanier Cansler at DHHS has handed out a couple of hundred million dollars in contracts – many of them no bid contracts – to his former clients from the days when he was a lobbyist.

But, now, he’s done something really strange.

He’s given Prodigy Diabetes Care an exclusive no bid contract to be the state’s sole corporation providing supplies to Medicaid diabetes patients. That means if you’re on Medicaid and need a syringe or test strip you have got one choice – you’ve got to get it from Prodigy.

So who is Prodigy?

It’s owned by two brothers, Rick Admani Abulhaj and Ramzi Abulhaj. Before they owned Prodigy the Abulhaj brothers owned a corporation named VitalCare in Miami – which more or less did the same thing as Prodigy. VitalCare was sued for stealing another company’s patent, lost the case and went bankrupt. (Even odder, during the trial a federal magistrate ordered the Abulhaj brothers jailed for contempt of court – for what sounds like agreeing to a settlement then ignoring it.)

Anyway VitalCare lost and went bankrupt and the Abulhaj brothers moved to North Carolina and started Prodigy. One last fact: The Abulhaj brothers make a lot of their medical products in China, and when the FDA toured their plant in Shanghai it promptly hit them for violating Food and Drug safety regulations.

And, believe it or not, these are the folks Secretary Cansler has decided North Carolina Medicaid patients with diabetes must buy their medical supplies from.

Now, maybe, over the last few years Prodigy has straightened out all its problems and it’s smooth sailing ahead. But Secretary Cansler hasn’t mentioned, addressed or offered one word of explanation about why he chose a company with Prodigy’s checkered past for an exclusive contract – or why he’s confident a diabetes patient using a syringe made in China by a company cited by the FDA for violating safety regulations doesn’t have anything to worry about.

Seriously Carter why isn't the N&O picking up this story? I could start up a company as easy as these boys did if I was going to get a no bid contract.

Why would anyone expect the N&O to report this story until forced to do so? Ann Ryder and others tried to warn years ago that mental health “reform” was just a plan to loot the system, and the women’s caucus at the Legislature even met with DHHS Sec Carmen Hooker Odom to warn about the waste, but the N&O still won’t print the facts Ann Ryder reported. Looks like they can’t refute them or they would have done so.

Didn’t you read the apologies the major papers in NC printed a few years ago for supporting the racist political thugs and murderers who engineered the Wilmington Riots in 1898, when Democratic Party leaders used force to take control because they didn’t like the election results? Every time Jim (Governor for Life) Hunt talks about “Good Governor Aycock” I’m reminded that some people believe little crimes like conspiracy to commit murder can be overlooked when committed by a member of the team. If murder is minor, surely major theft can be ignored?

In my opinion, the major papers in this state have helped keep their pals in power for over a century by selective reporting, but they’re no longer “partisan.” They’re just as willing to ignore Republicans who cut backroom deals as Democrats, and they’re perfectly willing to trash an independent minded Democrat if he threatens their political pals.

After the thieves they support have made off with the loot, they may report part of what happened a federal grand jury is about to embarrass them by indicting one of their pals. If I could figure out Black would be an embarrassment in 2000, how could the press miss the story? They missed it for the same reason they continue to miss the boat on Easley and refused to print the whole story on Leake: they are so biased they’re blinded to facts that don’t fit their fiction.

I’ve made my opinion that Easley was the errand boy as clear as I know how. Others have stated in this forum that Hunt and Bowles were investors with people implicated in the Cannonsgate mess. Why doesn’t the N&O report the extent to which the personal investments of prominent politicians (and members of their immediate family) might indicate a conflict of interest and the extent to which state resources were used to promote certain real estate investments?

I’ve been talking and writing about the Golden Fleece and the Clean Water Slush Fund for years, as well as the way state funds have been used to leverage private investments of the politically connected. The major papers finally noticed (after the state auditor reported it) that there might be a few problems at Golden Fleece “attributable to the prior management.” Come on folks. The current management is nothing but a continuation of the prior management.

Expecting the whole story from papers with a track record of leaving out facts makes about as much sense as expecting water to run uphill. We have higher taxes than surrounding states, but what do we get for the money? The public is being robbed and the press “watchdogs” only attack those who try to warn the public, though they will bark at any criminals dumb enough to get caught, just for show.

What can you do? Use these facts to show others the N&O is not reporting important facts. This is just the tip of a big ugly iceberg and most of the corruption is still hidden.

Thanks for the mention, Fern. These brothers apparently know how to play the no-bid game. This will include major contributions, reported and otherwise, to their political angels.

Old timers will remember Wallace Hyde, the Mars Hill High School coach in Madison County at the time of A.E. Leake (Larry's father), Lacy Thornburg (student at MH College, later judge and AG), Liston Ramsey (later Speaker of the House), Zeno and E.Y. Ponder. Hyde, W. Ted Phillips, and J. Ted Jordan started an insurance agency together, and if I remember correctly, if you wanted to do business with the state, you had to buy a bond through Hyde's agency. Hyde went on to be very, very $uccessful and raised huge contributions for the Raleigh and DC boys. His partners became the no-bid king of road contractors, Phillips & Jordan.

Ann, you know so much and have written so much the N&O and their fellow-travelers won’t print, it would sure help if you would post some of the facts they’ve hidden from the public here. Your casual reference to Phillips & Jordan deserves a major story in and of itself.

Most readers have no idea of the significance of your reference to Phillips & Jordan, so let me contribute a little background. I know from reading the Madison County Sentinel (September 13, 2000) that “A 7-passenger Bell helicopter brought gubernatorial candidate Mike Easley to Mars Hill for a fundraiser at Larry Leake’s home.” A letter in the paper noted “While in Madison County Easley had a little talk with a young lady who recently resigned – under fire – from the DMV. Why? To help in a cover-up of someone’s misdeeds?”

Smart letter writer, although I’m not sure which cover-up he was referencing because there were so many possibilities. Larry Leake was at the time representing a state employee who had been accused of what should have been treated as a major crime involving a high probability of election fraud, selling driver’s licenses to non-citizens, and Easley was the Attorney General. Could Leake holding a high dollar fundraiser for Easley have anything to do with the handling of that case? Did Leake have any personal interest in the matter beyond representing his client(s)? And when he dismissed any suggestion of fraudulent voter registrations, was he speaking as a member of the State Board of Elections (then appointed by Hunt, later by Easley and now by Perdue), or as a friend of Hunt who supported issuing driver’s licenses to people here illegally to help them break the law, or in some other conflicted capacity?

It was a Phillips & Jordan helicopter that flew Easley to the fundraiser at Leake’s house in 2000, and I didn’t hear any questions about that trip at the recent SBOE hearings. Of course Leake may have known all he needed to know about that trip; he might even have arranged the flight. Leake asking questions about other 2000 Easley flights while ignoring that one should have been a big red flag, but the self-proclaimed watchdogs sure ignored it.

If there was nothing wrong with the flight or the fundraiser and Leake had no conflict of interest, why wasn’t that stated publicly and the request that he recuse himself discussed? Of course since the press had zinged Leake earlier for having a conflict of interest involving a gift to Roy Cooper of far less than he raised for Mike Easley, it might be hard to find many regular voters as opposed to political partisans who would buy that story. (Let’s see, the press thought Leake should have recused himself because of a gift of $3,200 to Roy Cooper, and they were right, but raising roughly $50 grand for Easley didn’t deserve a mention, possibly because they’re now in protect Perdue and Hunt mode. Right!) No wonder the people answering questions had such a hard time remembering things; Leake couldn’t even remember the rules on conflicts of interest and failed to publicly respond to the required question of board members concerning conflicts of interest. Forgetfulness was clearly acceptable strategy.

Surely Leake knew about the bid-rigging scandal that involved the DOT contractors who were providing Easley transportation to Leake’s fundraiser and about at least one of the no-bid contracts you referenced, the one to remove the rockslide on I-40. (Hmm, road is closed again, is it not?) Did Leake arrange for Easley to use the Phillips & Jordan helicopter? Did Leake arrange the fundraiser at his home? Did Leake even know there was a fundraiser at his home? Is Leake’s memory as bad as the memories of the other witnesses, or does he know a lot more about flights and fundraising than he wants to discuss in public?

Do voters have a right to know who is getting preferential treatment on state contracts or their financial ties to prominent political figures? Is there any point in having a law on conflicts of interest when the politically powerful can publicly ignore it and the press won’t say peep?

The fact that the major media in this state devoted so much attention to the recent SBOE hearings into Mike Easley’s campaign finances without revealing Easley’s close ties to the Chairman of the committee, Larry Leake, who led the questioning away from hot button issues, reveals the incredible level of bias that protects the major white collar criminals who are ruining the economy of North Carolina while enriching themselves and their friends.

No bid contracts are just one of many ways the powerful use politics to transfer funds from the public to their pet projects, while the MSM provides propaganda to support the transfer. Until the pain of exposure exceeds the profits from keeping the lid on, don’t expect the whole story from the MSM. Robin Hood didn’t “steal from the rich to give to the poor,” he recognized that thieves had taken over the government and were using their official position and political power to steal from the public and he tried to return what was being taken.

It is past time for honest people, regardless of party, to try to stop the stealing.

Currently these two individuals are under investigation by Florida bunkrubtcy court, for illegally transferring money, while they were going through bankruptcy and owed other companies money, to their Chinese company which later ended up in their North Carolina company Diagnostics Devices Inc.

DDI was a Florida company, which also filed for bankruptcy to hide the money they illegally transefered to China, and started a North Carolina Company also called Diagnostics Devices Inc. Futher more after Florida court find evidence of money laundering they started new company called Prodigy Diabetes Care so they can have another layer and hide any connection between Prodigy Diabetes Care to Diagnostics Devices Inc. NC, to Diagnostics Devices Inc. FL to Vital Care FL to Vital Care Group FL.

Most of these companies are put through bunkruptcies. Too bad our Government is too slow .

No-bid contract is a popular term for what is officially known as a "sole source contract." A sole source contract implies that there is only one person or company that can provide the contractual services needed and that any attempt to obtain bids would only result in one person or company being available to meet the need

The huge success Chanel bags achieved in fashion realm and her endless love stories with numerous upper-class men made her a super glamorous woman always caught in the spotlight. From her stunning appearance, it is hard to imagine what a miserable and tough experience she had been put through before she succeeded. Actually throughout her life, Chanel handbag was unwilling to mention her humiliating past in public. Instead, she always cast a powerful woman image to the public, without compromising elegance and classiness, the exclusive qualities of upper ladies. Her story as a brilliant fashion giant gaining her unprecedented success through unremitting efforts and strong willpower in spite of her humble breeding has inspired generations of people, especially those who struggle to rise to the upper from nothing. And the most valued treasure Chanel left behind derived from her innovative and bold attempts to free women from fashion bondage by going “back to basics”.

Undoubtedly Nike kobe shoes has once again proven itself in the lightweight segment of shoes also with its collection featuring the new Foamposite Lite. Its urbane range exclusively designed Nike shoes for the basketball champions offers the highest level of flexibility, support and breathability. This basketball shoes have a polyurethane top with a synthetic protective covering over it. The inner Nike air max mesh that you see adds more comfort and gives a more secured fitting. Also, the Nike Free foam thickness is such that is reduces the overall weight of the shoe and provides more firmness while playing. The popularity of basketball Nike Free 7.0 has made it the sport of choice for many people and also inspired great innovations in shoe designs among the manufacturers. The Nike shoes brand has continued to offer the competition a real run for their money. Nike basketball kobe shoes are in a class of their own because of the cutting edge technology and creative designs used for these and other Nike shoes. To enable customers enjoy their products at wallet-friendly prices Nike basketball shoes discounts are on Nike air max offer. There are tons of sporting lebron shoes for every basketball player from Nike. From the NBA superstar to the kindergarten kid who aspires to be the next big thing, Nike kobe shoes has your sporting shoes requirements catered for. The range is wide and features shoes themed on some NBA legends and current stars. Popular brands include Nike Free 7.0 Zoom Kobe V, Zoom Sharkley iD (Wide) basketball shoe, Hyperize TB Three Quarter basketball shoe, Air Zoom Flight Five iD basketball shoe, LeBron Air Max VII,Nike air max Hyperdunk iD among others. Nike shoes are meticulously designed to make your basketball sporting events memorable.
The Nike 6.0 Dunk High, air shoes as the name suggests, belongs to the family of 'high' Nike Dunk products, relatives to it in that family being the likes of the 'Custom Nike Dunk High Back to the Future,' the Nike 6.0 Dunk High Black Coral, the Nike airmax 6.0 Dunk High Mint and the Nike Dunk Dinosaur Junior, to name but just a few of all 'high' nike free products. I didn't really know why there seemed to be so much buzz around the 'High' Nike Dunk products, until I got to use the Nike High - a nike free 5.0 shoe that I have since (in the few months of my using it), gotten thoroughly enchanted with. In keeping with its name, air shoes the Nike 6.0 Dunk High is a truly high shoe in the real sense of the word 'high.' The shoe's height is, however, not entirely based on its sole thickness, because as far as dunk sole thickness goes, the thickness of this Air Max 90 shoe's sole is pretty much average. The height of the Nike 6.0 Dunk High is, on the contrary, most manifest on the nike free shoe's upper body; where the shoe starts off quite low at the base (where the toes go into the shoe);Nike Air Max 2009 and then grows in height as it progresses towards the center, to reach a peak height at the end of the air maxshoe's tongue (approximately at the center of the shoe lengthwise) - before falling slightly towards the back of the airmax shoe, perhaps in a bid to ensure the wearer's comfort. The vertical stripes engraved on the shoe's 'protruding' sole on the low-most part of the nike free 5.0 shoe also contribute in making these dunk appear taller than it would be when gauged with a tape measure.Besides height, air shoes another highly remarkable feature of the dunks is its multi-color properties, and in this regard, thenike free seems to be unabashedly colorful. My own pair, for instance, has at least 6 colors that I can count: starting with the black that is painted on a portion of the shoe's sole that borders the upper body of the airmax shoes, moving onto the yellow which colors the shoe's sole, and Nike Air Max 2009 moving onto the pink that colors the Nike tick appearing on the body of the shoe. Other colors on my pair of the Nike 6.0 Dunk High include a shade of light blue on two small sections of the air maxshoe (towards the front and on the back-most part of the shoe's upper body), the white on the shoe's laces, and a tint of light-grey on running diagonally from the lower section of the back-most part of the shoe's upper body, all the way the highest point of the nike free 5.0 shoe near the tip of the tongue.
