A Democratic friend who was in Washington recently reports that Republicans there are “giddy.” They’re convinced they have Obama and the Democrats on the run, certain they’re finally headed for a big election.

But they may have miscalculated. The election is next year, not this year.

And they may be overreaching. Especially if the face of the GOP remains Crazy Joe Wilson, John Boehner and Rush Limbaugh.

They’ve forgotten a couple of things from their last landslide in 1994. Which didn’t last all that long. Namely, they forgot:
  • They had a positive message then, the Contract With America. Not just rage.
  • Clinton took a blow, but he was reelected.
  • Democrats learned a lesson and retooled themselves to win back Congress and the White House.
I will say this: Richard Burr has avoided most of these mistakes. He has a smile, not a frown. He doesn’t go in for the ranting, raving and razzing that makes his colleagues look unhinged.

The winds may be with the GOP next year, and Burr looks stronger than some Democrats think. But Republicans had best not get too giddy.

Exactly, Gary. I've been saying that very same thing on the "forum". We can't count our chickens as republicans, for sure. It only takes a very slight turn in positives/negatives to change the whole political landscape in America. Right now if the elections were held today, republicans would most likely fair out pretty well. It's a long time until Nov 2010. A whole lot of things can happen. There is a lot of unspent stimulous money still out there that can be used to give a big boost to many things around the country and unemployment is now bottoming out which means that it will soon begin to improve. Things can't get much worse....only better. That isn't good for repubs, to be honest...although it is really good for America. I'm cautiously optimistic about Nov 2010. There are many elements for republicans to fight...the mainstream media, the great grassroots elements within the democratic party, the fact (as said before) that things can only get better...not worse, Obama's involvement in key congressional and senatorial campaigns. It's an uphill battle....but it's not a tough hill for climbers and republicans have proven over and over again they're climbers.
