Walter Jones Jr. always surprises me.
I first met him in 1977, when he was Governor Hunt’s “eastern North Carolina representative.” It was understood that he was hired as a favor to his father, Congressman Walter Jones, and that young Walter was preparing to take his father’s seat eventually.
That was no surprise.
Then he got elected to the North Carolina House. He became a champion of ethics and open government. A pleasant surprise.
Then he was one of the Democrats who ousted Liston Ramsey and elected Joe Mavretic Speaker.
A disappointing surprise.
Then he lost a Democratic primary for Congress, mainly because the district had become heavily black. No surprise.
Then he became a Republican. And endorsed Jim Gardner over Hunt in 1992.
Another disappointing surprise.
Then he unseated Congressman Martin Lancaster in the 1994 Republican tide.
Another disappointing surprise.
Then he became a critic of the Iraq war – and some other Bush policies.
A pleasant surprise.
This week he was one of only seven Republicans who voted to rebuke Crazy Joe Wilson.
A very pleasant surprise.
Is it expediency or conscience? That depends on which way he surprises you, I suppose.
But I’ve talked to Walter several times in recent years. I believe there is a core of conscience that guides him.
Talking once about his switch to the GOP and his conversion to the Catholic Church, he made a great observation: “I switched my church and my party, and I’m a lot happier with my church.”
No surprise there.

Jones could very well be a close cousin to Temple...of "Spirits of the Air" fame in that he goes to the evil and even though he says he's through with one kind of involvement, becomes in another if it has merit. Joe Wilson made a mistake which I am certain came more from built-up frustration than trying to be demeaning and a lack of respect for Obama. The only people that believe the actions against him in congress led by Nancy Pelosi weren't completely politically motivated are those that would vote for the devil if he ran on the democratic ticket....lock-step, bow-down "democrats are always right", mindless, far-left thinkers. I saw a site recently that said that now Wilson's opponent in the next election got a million bucks after this incident.....but that Wilson has gotten 1.8 million in donations. This made him a hero...a martyr of sorts. The dems are treating him like they treat Sarah Palin. He is being used as some kind of poster child to support their cause. But, it is backfiring. I am surprised you, Gary, don't see this.

Jones is crazy.Joe Wilson is right. Not like the leftie crazies who asked of Bush...."where is Lee Harvey Oswald when you need him."etc....but you old hacks forget that.

I'm a Democrat, however that doesn't mean I always fall in line with views of the Democrats, or that I'm going to vote for somebody just because they have the D beside their name. I feel that Jones is a man that goes by his own views and principles not just party ideals.

Strange thing is Joe Wilson told the truth. Now Obama wants to make all illegals, illegal. Have you noticed there is not enough swine flu vaccine for our seniors, but Obama has plenty to give to third world nations, most who hate our guts? Could this be Obama death panel? Were was the outcry from the liberal media, when the NR website ran Palin does pron movies? Thank god for Fox News, the rest of the media, are just lap dogs for corrupt liberals. You know about lap dogs, they cuddle at the liberals feet, and pee all over themselves.

As a Young Republican (club) I threw Walter B's first fundraiser in Carteret County and have regretted it often. He's done a few nice things over the years, but never been much of a Congressman. He's given committees assignments for rubber stamping purposes and he was a coward when the OLF fight began. ("It's about dark sky" he kept saying - that was real first to the pilots I spoke with. Since when did any aircraft carrier turn it's lights off? They turn on every light they can.) As a former Jarhead I'm dissappointed in his posturing on the war - he made us look weak and stupid - which pretty much reflected his own character. As an activist I've listened to Walter give lip service to both Dems and Repubs at various speaking engagements. His loyalty and principles seem relative to what is safe or to whatever delusion he is suffering at the time.

I agree with you that Congessman Walter Jones is a public servant who is willing to stray from his base philosophy and party to vote his conscience. This trait is to be admired, even if we don't agree with him all the time. But for many such independence is either cowardly or brave, not much in-between. And we wonder why so much legislation is stalled by nobody giving an inch on the question at hand.
