News 2 has obtained documented proof that Governor Mark Sanford used taxpayer money for at least one trip to see his mistress in Argentina.
In documents from the South Carolina Department of Commerce are hotel receipts, travel receipts and an itinerary of a “Trade and Investment Trip” the governor took in June of 2008 to Argentina and Brazil.
In a statement released Thursday, Sanford admitted to meeting with the woman he had the affair with while on that particular trip.
E-mail’s obtained by The State newspaper, in Columbia, detail messages exchanged between Sanford and the woman about their time together during the June 2008 trip.
Governor Sanford said that he will pay the state of South Carolina back for the cost of the trip to Argentina.
Now Sanford wants to pay the state back ... 'cause he got "caught". I say as a republican Sanford should step down immediately!

I’m madder than a rabid llama about what’s been going on in Argentina!
It’s bad enough Governor Sanford told a bunch of lies, disappeared for a week, then got caught with his pants down around the Panama Canal. I guess “hiking up the Appalachian Trail” means something different when he says it…
Now we get to hear Sanford’s sexy computer messages to his girlfriend in Argentina. My face is redder than a champion radish! I don’t know what “tan lines” are but I......
Then it turns out old Bill Clinton was in this Argentina place at exactly the same time, hanging out at some strip club.
I don’t see the point of getting to be a two-term President of the United States of America if you still have to pay to get your jollies at the Pussycat Peeler Bar & Organ Emporium.
And why a foreign strip club? I’ve heard of “free trade” but this is ridiculous.
Aren’t red blooded (and plastic boobed) American women good enough for our politicians anymore? Patriotic pulchritudinous ladies across these United States should be livid about this new kind of outsourcing.
I say we do like Margaret Thatcher and invade Argentina. OK, our excuse for invading is even crazier than Thatcher’s, but she got away with it.
Her approval ratings shot way up! (Are you listening, Teleprompter Kid?)
We need to revenge all the fine American females who’re being pushed aside in favor of Buenos Aires bimbos.
I say we send in Navy Seal snipers to take out all the fake boobs in Argentina! The war will have the added bonus of ticking off that fat, stupid weirdo Hugo Chavez guy who lives next door.
Let Operation Infinite Bust-ice begin!

Bwahahahahahahahahaha.....I liked it.
Good one. If Sanford doesn't "do the right thing", I hope SNL picks him up and generates jokes about him as well as any and all of the late night shows.
I'm a repub...I'm supporting our repub cause...and I'm N O T supporting this idiot.
Again....GREAT post....LOVED IT !!!

Update: Fox News has apologized for identifying Sanford as a Democrat. Read that apology here.
Additional Reporting By Sahil Kapur
When does an embattled Republican suddenly become an embattled Democrat? When Fox News is covering him, of course.
The network known for its conservative leaning ran footage of Mark Sanford admitting to an extramarital affair on Wednesday with a Chyron identifying the South Carolina Republican -- near tears -- as a D, for Democrat.
Media Matters has the screen grab on its site and notes that Fox News later changed Sanford's party affiliation to Republican.
But it's also worth adding that this is not the first time the network has misidentified a GOPer in the midst of acknowledging misconduct. When former congressman Mark Foley admitted to having problems with alcoholism -- after reports that he had behaved inappropriately with congressional pages -- Fox News also identified him as a Democrat.
LOL!

Yep...I've seen that also. I've also seen CNN and MSNBC and CBS identify congressmen and senators and other elected officials as being republicans when there were negatives to present about them.........then present NO party affiliation to individuals in public office that were democrats.
Just depends on how good a news site is about it's partaniship....lib/dems just skip over the obvious if it means one of theirs is crooked or strays or is less-than-truthful.
But, hey, they hold the national leadership and they control the direction of our country. All I can say is....."God help us".

Fantasy becomes reality and collides with the real world.
What I find most interesting is why are his aides allowing him any where near a camera or any audio recourding device???
Next thing, while the poetic saga of Sanford is playing out
the McCain campaign continues it's assult on Sarah Palin
The GOP is suffering from a fatal case of self servicing self destruction
In the attempt to purge itself of religious and values voters, they are continuing to take down the entire party.
meanwhile who is paying attention to the fact that some elected democrats and republicians are going to make a fortune off the cap and trade bill
WHATEVER HAPPENED TO CONFLICT OF INTEREST

If I could pass only one piece of legislation I think it would be the "Term Limits and Session Limits Bill".
All Senators can only serve one term, all members of the House can only serve 2 terms. No congress shall meet for more than 2 months in a single calander year.
Now I will vote for that.

Hopefully he'll dig a hole deep enough to fall in and never be heard from again.
He's a jerk, an idiot and should be tarred and feathered and run out of the capitol mansion in South Carolina.

Politically I don't think he had many options even before the soulmate revelation. He is an advocate of term limits and stuck to his guns when a congressman and only served I think three terms. Isn't he already in his second term as governor? That pretty much limits where he could go from here. I guess he could run for a senate seat but aren't both SC senators Republicans? He would either have to wait in line for one of them to decide not to run for reelection or challenge in a primary. It's my understanding that he has a lot in common with our own Mike Easley. Neither of them have ever been particularly strong party men, more on their own than party loyalists. I don't think the SCGOP would be particularly helpful or appreciative of a primary challenge against a sitting senator. He was eyeing a run for the Presidency, (take a VP maybe) but that was a longshot to begin with, and now out of the question. I suppose he might have make a lateral move into the state Supreme Court but that too would seem to be a long shot at this point. Is he a lawyer? Don't most politicians at this point either join a promonent law firm in the state capital or head for K Street. I suppose if he ever shuts up and things die down one of those would be his best option.
Question- Is he related to the late Senator Terry Sanford?

Well, one thing is for sure.....Christians shouldn't run for office and certainly shouldn't be in charge of any political party in our state. It's an awful thing to be and the electorate and the government needs to rally against it.
"Bible Thumpers".....whatcha gonna do with 'em?

I think it has more to do with the misuse of religion for political gain. I tend not to trust anyone that throws their faith up in may face. They could be sincere or it could all be an act.

I don't have to tell you my "religious" beliefs, Huh?....so, you know this comes from that perspective. I absolutely HATE hypocracy, especially religious hypocracy. But, I don't just dismiss a person's religious beliefs out of hand when they make an outwardly religious display. I certainly don't "assume" someone is hypocritical just because I don't side with him/her politically.
I'm not one that likes a political candidate that runs his/her campaign BASED on their religious belief either...like you. But, expressing a belief in a god or a particular religion, to me, isn't throwing their faith up in my face.
Just my thoughts on the matter. We all have our opinion on this, I guess.

I agree. Expressing faith isn't throwing it in my face. What Sanford has been doing is.

Yeah, we agree on that one. Funny how ya see the religion start to ooze out after a politician gets caught in a damaging situation, isn't it?

I say we make a deal to get rid of one embarassing politician from each party. We get rid of Mark (cousin of Terry) Sanford, and the Dems get rid of Barney Frank. Now Frank makes Sanford look tame. Frank had a ''rent boy'' (homo prostitute) who was his live-in lover in his Washington apartment and actually running a homo prostitution ring out of Frank's apartment. Kinda makes that trip to Argentina look like small potatoes, doesn't it? And unlike Sanford, who has had a positive record in public office, Frank did enormous damage to our economy as a committee chairman by being a major player in the subprime bubble. The rent boy is the least of the reasons Barney Frank needs to go.

Okay who do we have to give up for you to drop Ensign? One of the interesting things regarding political scandals is how often the Democrats are expected to go while the Republicans just seem to get a pass when they get caught. But maybe that's just my imagination.

Well, Barney Frank is still there. And you don't even have to go outside of that state to find another major one. Teddy Kennedy is still there even after that little inconvenience with Mary Jo Kopeckne. At least Sanford and Ensign did not do something that caused a mistress to die. I remember the old College Republican ditty ''Ted the Magic Driver'' to the tune of ''Puff the Magic Dragon''. Teddy Boy should have been in prison instead of the Senate.

Of course you can find examples on both sides but your two examples are decades ago aren't they? I'm thinking more in terms of the recent past. Veter in La. is probably going to get reelected, Criag doesn't seem to be going anywhere, Sanford is just a lovesick pup in the governor's mansion. The governor of NY resigned, the mayor of Detroit is gone. You would think that the opposite would be true wouldn't you?
How about creating an identity on the blog. It would make it much easier to discuss issues if we know who is doing the talking.

Throughout the years, there have been countless numbers of "Barney Franks" and "Sanfords" and "Ted Kennedys" and so forth....from BOTH parties.
Neither party is any better or worse than the other with respect to graft and corruption, illegalities, moral downfalls and so forth.
Sometimes I think some politicians enter politics specifically to find a way to be dispicable. There sure have been a bunch that have succeeded. And, it's from local to federal elected office holders. I mean...check out the Cary Allred thing, y'all. This guy has been a loose cannon and a wingnut from day one back in the late '60's and early 70's. Yet....he got into office somehow. I think that's the case in a LOT of elections around our country....both parties know which candidates are legitimate and would be good, but somehow the losers get voted in.
But....with regard to Allred....he's gone now. You can't IMAGINE how happy that makes me feel.
